Durgotsav

Durgotsav is a famous Hindu festival when Goddess Durga is worshipped. Durgotsav is also known as Durga Puja. The Goddess Durga arrives on the Earth on the first day of Devi Paksha, which starts on the next day of Mahalaya Amavasya. She departs on Durga Visarjan day. The days when she arrives and departs are significant and considered as omen of coming time.

Durgotsav is the main puja utsav that SPUVIC annually celebrates over 3 days with elaborate puja rituals. The first day is dedicated for Shashthi, which includes Bilva Nimantran, Kalparambha, Akal Bodhon, Amantran and Adhivas. The Saptami puja including Navpatrika Puja and Kolabou Puja followed with Ashtami puja that ncludes Durga Ashtami, Kumari Puja and Sandhi Puja. The 3rd day includes Navami including Maha Navami Puja, Durga Balidan and Navami Homa followed with Dashami that includes Durga Visarjan, Vijayadashami and Sindoor Utsav.

One of main attraction of our Durgotsav is the colourful cultural programs generally performed by community talents and external professional performers. Community members also take the Durgotsav as an opportunity to showcase the latest traditional Bengali fashion in sharee and dresses.

Special feasts are organised over three days of festivities, including Friday dinner, Saturday launch and dinner, Sunday launch and evening feast.
